About Low Noise Home
Hi, I'm Daniel Holloway.
I live in Cary, North Carolina, with my wife Maya, a nurse whose shifts change every week, and our two kids, Ethan (14) and Lily (9). Our house isn't spotless. We're not anti-technology. But we've spent years figuring out which devices, apps, and subscriptions actually make family life easier—and which ones just add noise.
Low Noise Home is where I share what we've learned.
Why This Site Exists
A few years ago, I realized our family calendar had become a mess of school emails, app notifications, subscription renewals, and smart-home alerts. We had technology everywhere, but somehow staying organized felt harder than ever.
I'd spent years as a consumer technology product manager, so I understood how apps compete for attention. Now, as a privacy consultant, I see how much data our daily tools collect. But it wasn't until I became the household's main cook, schedule-balancer, and repair person that I understood the real question:
Does this thing actually help, or does it just create more work?
That question became the foundation of this site.
What You'll Find Here
This isn't a blog about living off-grid or rejecting technology. It's about using technology deliberately—and knowing when to skip it.
I write about:
Family digital admin — How I use ChatGPT to turn school emails, Maya's shift schedule, and fridge leftovers into a weekly meal plan and shopping list. (Spoiler: I still handwrite recipes into a paper cookbook.)
Privacy at home — What smart appliances actually collect, which apps deserve a privacy checkup, and how to make proportionate choices without paranoia.
Subscription audits — We hit $219 a month in kitchen and family subscriptions before I finally did the math. I'll show you how to audit yours in 30 minutes.
Phone boundaries and attention — Our no-phone dinner rule, why Sunday baking gets an AM/FM radio instead of a smart speaker, and how we handle screens with a 9-year-old and a teenager.
Offline by choice — Hand-brewed coffee, charcoal grilling, repairing the toaster, and other analog practices that work—not because they're trendy, but because they're genuinely better for our family.
What This Site Isn't
It's not a smart-home review site.
It's not a minimalism blog that makes you feel guilty about owning things.
It's not anti-technology or nostalgic for a past that never existed.
It's not a place for untested repair advice, recipes I haven't cooked, or privacy warnings I can't back up.
I'm not a professional repair technician or a chef. I'm a dad who tests things in his own kitchen and garage, makes mistakes, and shares what actually works.
My Background
I spent over a decade as a consumer technology product manager before becoming a privacy consultant. I understand how product teams design apps to capture attention and data. I also understand why families adopt them anyway—because convenience matters when you're juggling work, kids, and dinner.
That's the tension I write about: how to get real value from technology without letting it take over your home.
My credibility comes from hands-on testing, practical household experience, and honest cost-versus-effort decisions. Not from pretending to be a futurist.
The Name
Low Noise doesn't mean silent. It means intentional.
It's the opposite of a home where every device beeps, every app demands attention, and every subscription auto-renews. A low-noise home is one where technology earns its place—and where the people in it come first.
My signature phrase sums it up: Use what helps. Fix what matters.
A Few More Things About Me
I cook adobo, sinigang, and lumpia from Maya's family recipes—translating them with ChatGPT, then handwriting them into a paper cookbook.
I ride an old gravel bike on the Cary and RTP greenways when I need to think.
Lily helps me measure ingredients. Ethan helps with pizza and sometimes complains that dinner is "homemade again."
I listen to AM/FM radio during Sunday baking.
I shop at local hardware stores and thrift stores, not because I'm frugal, but because I like things that last.
Let's Figure This Out Together
If you're a parent or homeowner trying to make your household calmer, more private, and easier to manage—without turning it into one more subscription dashboard—you're in the right place.
I don't have all the answers. But I've tested a lot of things, made plenty of mistakes, and learned which tradeoffs are worth it.

Low Noise Home is a personal blog. I'm not sponsored by any product or service mentioned here. When I recommend something, it's because it worked for my family—not because someone paid me to say so.
Use what helps. Fix what matters.
